Häagen-Dazs and Stella Artois Turn a Toronto Billboard Into a Flirty Conversation

· ·

A pair of Toronto billboards has turned a simple West End ad spot into something that looks a lot like a public date invitation.

Häagen-Dazs Canada started the late-summer exchange with a simple message, “Let’s grab a pint,” but Stella Artois Canada was quick to read between the lines.

The beer brand placed its own billboard right beside the ice cream ad at St. Clair and Weston Road, replying, “Are you asking us out?”

From there, the brands kept the joke going across outdoor ads and social media, giving everyone an unexpected bit of entertainment during their daily routines.

It Started With One Pint

Häagen-Dazs’ first billboard began around a phrase that can mean two very different things. For the ice cream brand, “grab a pint” points to its familiar ice cream format. Stella Artois saw an opening to give the message a different meaning.

Stella bought the billboard directly beside it and answered with, “Are you asking us out?” The side-by-side placement made the exchange feel less like two separate ads and more like a conversation happening in public.

The playful setup is located in Toronto’s West End, specifically around St. Clair and Weston Road. This puts the campaign in front of people moving through the neighborhood, whether they are heading home, commuting, or making their way toward a patio.

The Conversation Got Bolder

Häagen-Dazs did not leave Stella’s message unanswered. The ice cream brand followed up with a mobile out-of-home truck carrying the question, “Depends. You into spooning?”

Stella came back with another suggestive line: “Only if you’re into six packs.”

The exchange has since moved beyond physical advertising. Häagen-Dazs recently joined the conversation on Instagram with a photo showing its ice cream alongside a Stella Artois beer. The post included the words “9 months later” and asked followers, “Do you ship this?”

The caption also made one thing clear: the imagined product is not real and cannot be purchased, at least not yet. It then asked followers whether they liked the pairing, keeping the joke open for more reactions.

Turning Ads Into a Conversation

While the lines are clearly meant to get a laugh, the campaign plays into the social side of summer in Toronto.

The message from Stella is not only about answering Häagen-Dazs. It also encourages people to get together, visit a neighborhood patio, and make the most of the final stretch of warm weather.

The West End placement makes that idea feel local rather than like a broad national campaign. People can encounter the exchange while going about an ordinary day, which gives the advertising a more personal feel.

This is also not the first time Stella Artois has leaned into a playful outdoor idea. The brand previously made a splash with last winter’s snow chalice, showing that its outdoor marketing can extend beyond a standard product message.
