A tiny fishing community on British Columbia’s Central Coast is the talk of the province after Elon Musk, the billionaire head of Tesla and X, made an unexpected landing this past weekend. His brief visit has left the town of Bella Bella buzzing with excitement and speculation.

A High-Profile Arrival

On Saturday, August 16, a small private aircraft carrying Elon Musk touched down at the Bella Bella airstrip. He was then whisked away by helicopter, only to return on Monday, August 18, to depart.

For a community of about 1,500 people, located in the Great Bear Rainforest, seeing famous faces isn’t entirely new. The area’s natural splendor has attracted prominent visitors before, including members of the Royal Family.

But as local resident Seán Carter noted, this was different. “It’s not every day the richest man comes through,” he said. “That’s gonna be a tough one to top.”

What Was the Reason for the Visit?

Town talk suggests Elon Musk was on his way to a coastal property owned by James Murdoch, son of media tycoon Rupert Murdoch. The younger Murdoch, who is a board member at Musk’s company Tesla, reportedly purchased a recreational property off the B.C. coast in 2017.

Flight tracking data for a private jet linked to Musk supports this timeline. The aircraft landed in Vancouver late Friday night and departed on Monday afternoon, matching the time frame of his appearance in Bella Bella.

Musk’s Canadian Connection

Elon Musk holds Canadian citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Regina. He lived in Canada as a teenager, working in Saskatchewan and Vancouver before attending Queen’s University in Ontario.

His relationship with the country has been complicated. He has previously posted his affection for Canada. However, he also faced a petition earlier this year calling for the government to revoke his citizenship. This followed political statements he made and a since-deleted social media post that read, “Canada is not a real country.”

Mixed Reactions on the Ground

The visit drew varied responses. Emily Lowan, a candidate for the B.C. Green Party leadership, shared photos of Musk’s arrival. She used the occasion to comment on the environmental impact of private jets and the wealth gap.

In Bella Bella, Carter said the visit was the main topic of conversation all weekend. He added that even the world’s richest man couldn’t escape the realities of a small airport. The tarmac was busy, forcing Musk’s plane and helicopter to park far apart.

“He had to get out and walk a long way,” Carter explained. “I’m sure he was hoping to kind of come in and out kind of secretly, but there’s definitely no secrets here.”
