Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, died in their Santa Fe home on February 26, 2025. The Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed their deaths but ruled out foul play. Authorities have not released the cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.

Discovery and Investigation

Deputies conducted a welfare check at Hackman’s home around 1:45 p.m. They found the bodies of the 95-year-old actor, his 64-year-old wife, and their dog. Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza reported no signs of forced entry or suspicious circumstances.

A Legendary Career

Hackman earned five Oscar nominations and won twice. He received Best Actor for The French Connection (1971) and Best Supporting Actor for Unforgiven (1992). He played diverse roles in Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The Conversation (1974), Superman (1978), Hoosiers (1986), and The Birdcage (1996).

Hackman retired from acting in the early 2000s. His last major role was in Welcome to Mooseport (2004). After retiring, he wrote several novels, including Payback at Morning Peak (2011) and Pursuit (2013).
