Canadian Warship Commander Relieved of Duty
The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) has removed Cmdr. Adriano Lozer from his post as warship commander of HMCS Ottawa. The decision, announced on February 7, 2025, was based on a “loss of confidence” in his leadership. The navy assured that the removal was not related to misconduct.

Leadership Change Aboard HMCS Ottawa
Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee confirmed the decision, stating it was necessary to ensure effective leadership aboard the Halifax-class frigate. Lozer will return to Canada and take on new roles within Maritime Forces Pacific. The navy emphasized that procedural fairness will guide all administrative steps moving forward.
Cmdr. Landon Creasy, the former commanding officer of HMCS Regina, will assume command of HMCS Ottawa. Creasy, described as an experienced naval officer, will lead the vessel until it completes its Indo-Pacific deployment. The warship will return to its homeport in Esquimalt, British Columbia, in late March.
HMCS Ottawa’s Deployment in the Indo-Pacific
HMCS Ottawa is deployed under Operation Horizon, a mission supporting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The ship was in Manila, Philippines, on February 6, 2025, as confirmed by vessel-tracking software and a social media post from the Philippine Navy.
The vessel left Esquimalt in October 2024 and continues its operations in the region. The navy has stated that no additional details regarding Lozer’s removal will be released, citing privacy concerns and the personnel nature of the matter.

What This Means for the Royal Canadian Navy
Leadership changes in military operations can impact ongoing missions, but the RCN ensures stability through experienced officers like Creasy. The navy remains committed to its objectives in the Indo-Pacific and continues to collaborate with allies in the region.
