What Happened?

Emergency services responded to a 9-1-1 call around 4:55 p.m. Tuesday. The caller reported visible damage to a structural column. Upon arrival, Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) found five to six girders bowing. The top floor of the six-storey garage collapsed at approximately 4:47 a.m. Wednesday.

Photos from OFS show that three storeys, particularly the northeast corner, sustained significant damage. Snow and debris covered the ground floor. Reports indicate that large snowbanks, stored on the top level after recent heavy snowfall, may have contributed to the collapse.

Safety Measures and Road Closures

Authorities evacuated the structure shortly after discovering the compromised columns. No injuries have been reported. Engineers from the City of Ottawa and property managers inspected the garage and confirmed that a further collapse was imminent.

Several streets remain closed:

  • Slater Street: Closed between Bank and O’Connor Streets for vehicles and pedestrians.
  • Laurier Avenue: The north-side sidewalk between O’Connor and Bank Streets is closed.

Vehicle owners cannot retrieve their cars until further notice. Indigo, the company managing the parkade, advises affected individuals to email ottawa.servicedesk@group-indigo.com with the subject line “265 Laurier Ave” for updates.

City officials and parking management representatives remain on-site to assist vehicle owners. Efforts include offering transportation alternatives, such as taxi vouchers.

Ongoing Investigation

While the exact cause remains under investigation, preliminary findings suggest the heavy snow load on the rooftop may have weakened structural components. Ottawa’s deputy chief building official, Scott Lockhart, noted that engineers found the building at “risk of imminent collapse.”

Demolition crews and structural engineers continue to assess the site. Officials urge the public to avoid the area until further notice.

Key Points to Remember

  • No injuries have been reported.
  • Around 50 vehicles remain trapped inside.
