Fortnite Returns to iOS App Store in the U.S. After Nearly 5 Years: How to Download It Now
It’s official—Fortnite is back on iOS in the U.S., nearly five years after being banned from Apple’s App Store. Following a lengthy legal battle between Epic Games and Apple, iPhone and iPad users can finally download the world-famous battle royale game once again.

Why Was Fortnite Banned in the First Place?
Fortnite was removed from the App Store in August 2020 after Epic Games introduced a direct payment system, bypassing Apple’s 30% commission. This triggered a lawsuit over in-app payment monopolies and antitrust violations. The game’s absence from iPhones became a symbol of the broader debate about digital marketplace fairness.
What Changed in 2025?
A federal judge ruled on April 30, 2025, that Apple violated a court order by continuing to restrict alternative payment methods on its App Store. The judge threatened criminal contempt charges if Apple didn’t comply, paving the way for Fortnite’s return.
On May 21, Epic confirmed that Fortnite is now available in the U.S. App Store, along with the AltStore and Epic Games Store.

- Head to the official App Store listing for Fortnite.
- Download the launcher, which is a small install file.
- The full game (around 13GB) will then download from Epic’s servers.
Note: Your iPhone must run iOS 17.6 or later and have at least 4GB of RAM. This means iPhone 11 or newer models are compatible. Devices like the iPhone SE (2020) with only 3GB of RAM are not supported.
What’s New for iOS Players?
Epic is offering 20% back in Epic Rewards when players use its own payment system in Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys. This applies across supported platforms, including iOS.
In addition, Fortnite’s Star Wars-themed season is live, giving returning players a fresh reason to jump back into the battle bus.
A Big Win for Epic—and for Developers
Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed the relaunch on social media, posting: “We back fam.”

While Apple hasn’t commented publicly, analysts say this could reshape iOS app economics. Developers like Spotify and Netflix may now follow suit and bypass Apple’s payment system, reclaiming more revenue.
At its peak, Fortnite had 116 million iOS users. Whether it regains that level of engagement remains to be seen—but this return is a milestone moment in digital platform policy.
