That Kars4Kids Jingle Just Got Banned and Toronto Donors Should Pay Attention

·

The infamous Kars4Kids jingle will no longer haunt California airwaves. A state judge ruled last week that the charity’s long-running ads violate false advertising laws.

A California resident sparked the lawsuit after donating his car in 2021. He believed his donation helped “underprivileged kids from all over the U.S.,” according to Orange County Superior Court.

The court found the charity misled donors about where their money actually goes.

Where Does Kars4Kids Money Go?

The catchy ads feature young children playing instruments. However, the organization primarily funds Oorah, a Jewish non-profit.

Oorah runs summer camps in the U.S. and organizes gap year trips to Israel for older teens. Court documents revealed Kars4Kids funnels approximately $45 million annually to Oorah.

The judge ordered Kars4Kids to stop broadcasting non-compliant ads in California within 30 days. Future ads in the state must explicitly disclose the charity’s religious affiliation and geographic focus.

The Impact on Canadian Donors

Similar Kars4Kids ads play constantly across Canada. This raises concerns for local watchdogs monitoring charity transparency.

Charity Intelligence Canada, a Toronto-based watchdog, gave Kars4Kids its lowest possible score with a single-star rating.

“It’s a fail when it comes to transparency,” Kate Bahen, managing director of Charity Intelligence, told the CBC.

Kars4Kids Canada Financial Breakdown

Kars4Kids Canada operates as part of the Oorah Charitable Organization, a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency.

Canadian tax filings show the organization transferred massive sums out of the country. In the fiscal year ending May 31, 2025, they sent $12.6 million to the U.S. and Israel.

These funds supported projects like the Texas Torah Institute and the Cincinnati Hebrew Day School. Furthermore, Oorah spent $3.7 million on advertising and promotion during that same fiscal year.

Kars4Kids expects to appeal the California ruling, claiming the decision is “deeply flawed.”
