McDonald’s Canada has launched a limited-time test of the McVeggie burger across select cities in British Columbia, Ontario, and New Brunswick. The test runs from March 18 to April 14, 2025, allowing the company to collect customer feedback before deciding on a broader rollout.

What’s in the McVeggie?

The McVeggie features a breaded vegetable patty made with carrots, green beans, zucchini, peas, soybeans, broccoli, and corn. It is served on a toasted sesame seed bun with shredded lettuce and a mayo-style sauce. Customers looking for a spicier option can try the Spicy Habanero McVeggie, which includes a creamy, spicy habanero sauce.

Where Is McDonald’s Testing the McVeggie?

The McVeggie is available at select McDonald’s locations in:

  • British Columbia: Richmond, Langley, Surrey
  • Ontario: Brampton, Windsor
  • New Brunswick: Moncton, Dieppe, Riverview, Sussex

McDonald’s Canada and Plant-Based Options

This launch follows previous McDonald’s efforts to offer plant-based menu items. The PLT (Plant, Lettuce, Tomato) burger, featuring a Beyond Meat patty, was tested in 2019 and 2020, but was discontinued due to low customer demand.

Francesca Cardarelli, Chief Marketing Officer of McDonald’s Canada, believes the McVeggie has stronger appeal because it emphasizes real vegetables rather than mimicking meat.

“Our research shows that customers today want visible, real vegetables in their plant-based options,” she said.

Why McDonald’s Is Testing the McVeggie

A recent study by McDonald’s found that 35% of Canadians have dietary restrictions that influence where they dine. By adding a vegetarian-friendly burger, McDonald’s hopes to attract more customers who previously chose other restaurants due to limited menu options.

While the McVeggie is designed specifically for the Canadian market, McDonald’s sources ingredients from multiple countries due to seasonal availability.

What Happens Next?

During the test phase, McDonald’s will track customer interest, purchase frequency, and meal combinations. If successful, the McVeggie could become a permanent menu item in Canada.

McDonald’s will review whether the McVeggie drives repeat purchases and becomes a preferred choice for customers.

“We’re excited to see how Canadians respond to this new offering,” said Cardarelli. “Ultimately, their feedback will decide the future of the McVeggie.”
