A Tribute to Menswear and Black Style

The 2025 Met Gala will coincide with a new exhibit at the Met’s Costume Institute, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This is the first exhibit in over two decades to focus solely on menswear, specifically exploring Black fashion influences from the 18th century to today.

Inspired by Monica L. Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, the exhibition will examine how Black individuals have used fashion to express identity, challenge norms, and shape culture.

Met Gala Hosts and Star-Studded Committee

This year, the Met Gala will be hosted by an all-Black male co-chair lineup for the first time. The hosts include:

  • A$AP Rocky
  • Pharrell Williams
  • Colman Domingo
  • Lewis Hamilton
  • LeBron James (Honorary Chair)
  • Anna Wintour (Longtime Gala Overseer)

Additionally, a host committee has been assembled, featuring influential figures from fashion, entertainment, and sports. Some notable names include:

The “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit will open to the public on May 10, 2025, and will run until October 26, 2025.

The exhibit will showcase:

  • Twelve sections exploring characteristics of “dandy” fashion, including ownership, presence, distinction, and heritage.
  • Historical pieces reflecting how Black individuals have used tailored clothing to express identity.
  • Artistic installations by Torkwase Dyson and contributions from Ike Ude highlighting 18th-century Black dandies like Julius Soubise.

Fashion and Culture in the Spotlight

This year’s theme encourages creative interpretations of suiting and tailoring, emphasizing individuality and the cultural significance of menswear. As Usher put it, “The theme speaks to our rich culture that should always be widely celebrated.” Similarly, Sha’Carri Richardson added, “Our style isn’t just about clothing; it’s about how we own our space and tell our story.”

With this theme, the Met Gala 2025 is set to make history by not only honouring menswear fashion but also amplifying the contributions of Black designers, creatives, and cultural icons in shaping style trends worldwide.
