Microsoft to Shut Down Outlook Lite Android App Worldwide This May

· ·

Millions of Android users worldwide, from professionals in Ontario to remote workers across the globe, rely on streamlined applications to manage their daily communications. However, Microsoft has officially announced the permanent retirement of its simplified email client, setting a final cutoff date for the Outlook Lite Android application on May 25, 2026.

The Transition to the Main Outlook Mobile Experience

Microsoft launched Outlook Lite in 2022. This efficient 5MB app was built for older phones and slow networks. Now, Microsoft is phasing it out to consolidate its software. The company will focus entirely on its flagship application. This shift provides enhanced security and broader mailbox support. It also creates a unified platform for everyone.

As reported in PCMag’s April 2026 coverage on the shutdown, Microsoft already initiated this transition on October 6, 2025, by delisting the Lite version from the Google Play Store to prevent new downloads. The upcoming May deadline marks the definitive end of functionality for existing legacy users who still have the app installed.

What Happens to Your Data After May 25

If you attempt to launch the Lite application after the cutoff date, the app will still open, but it will completely disable all mailbox access, in-app navigation, and email functionalities.

Fortunately, a software retirement does not mean your data is lost. According to the official Microsoft Support documentation for Outlook Lite, user accounts will remain active and intact. All existing emails, calendar appointments, and file attachments are securely stored in the cloud and will be instantly accessible the moment you sign in to the standard Outlook Mobile app.

How to Prepare for the App Retirement

To avoid losing access to your inbox late next month, users must migrate to the full version of Microsoft Outlook.

Microsoft has embedded an “Upgrade” prompt directly within the Outlook Lite interface. This prompt seamlessly redirects users to the Google Play Store to download the standard application.

Whether you manage a local team or a global IT department, please act quickly. Instruct your employees to switch to the standard Outlook app well before May 25 to prevent workflow disruptions.
