1.3M Ford F-150 Trucks Investigated for Sudden Gear Downshifts
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks from the 2015 to 2017 model years. The issue involves sudden and uncommanded gear downshifts while driving at highway speeds, raising safety concerns about potential crashes.

What Prompted the Investigation?
NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 138 consumer complaints. Many drivers reported:
- Unexpected transmission shifts from high to low gear
- Sudden vehicle deceleration
- Rear wheels locking or skidding
- Temporary loss of control
Some incidents describe vehicles downshifting from sixth to first gear with no input from the driver.
A notable complaint from Ohio said the truck dropped into first gear while going 70 mph. The driver described nearly being thrown forward due to the sudden deceleration.
Trucks Affected
The investigation targets 2015–2017 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with six-speed automatic transmissions.
According to NHTSA records, an estimated 1,270,970 vehicles are potentially involved.

Ford’s Response
Ford confirmed it is cooperating with NHTSA. A spokesperson noted the issue affects only six-speed transmissions, not newer models with different systems.
This isn’t the first downshift-related concern for Ford. The company has issued several recalls in the past:
- 2016 recall: 153,000 trucks (2011–2012 models)
- 2019 recall: Expanded to 1.48 million F-150s, including 2013 models
- 2023 investigation: Led to a 2024 recall of 668,000 model year 2014 trucks
These prior recalls also involved sudden shifts into first gear, rear-wheel lockup, and loss of control.
Safety Risks and Next Steps
Sudden downshifts at high speed can cause:

- Loss of control
- Rear-wheel lock
- Increased risk of crash or injury
At this stage, NHTSA has launched a preliminary evaluation. This step helps assess how widespread and severe the issue may be. Based on findings, NHTSA may escalate the review to an engineering analysis, which could lead to a recall.
How Common Are Vehicle Recalls?

Vehicle recalls are not unusual. In 2024 alone, NHTSA reported over 1,000 safety recalls, affecting more than 35 million vehicles.
Most recalls don’t impact a carmaker’s bottom line significantly. However, repeated safety issues may raise investor concerns, especially if tied to warranty costs or delayed fixes.
Should F-150 Owners Be Concerned?
Owners of 2015–2017 F-150s with six-speed transmissions should:
- Monitor for any unusual transmission behavior
Report issues directly to NHTSA - Check the Ford recall database regularly for updates
No crashes or injuries have been officially linked to this specific investigation so far, but the risk is under close review.
The NHTSA investigation into 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks highlights growing concerns over transmission safety. Ford is cooperating with federal regulators, but the outcome could impact both drivers and investors. Owners should stay informed and report problems as they arise.
