Glacier Collapse Buries Swiss Village of Blatten – 90% Destroyed in Climate Wake-Up Call
A massive glacier collapse in southern Switzerland has left the alpine village of Blatten buried under ice, mud, and rock. The collapse occurred on May 28, 2025, when a large portion of the Birch Glacier broke free, triggering a fast-moving landslide that engulfed the valley below.

The disaster has devastated nearly 90% of the village, which had been evacuated on May 19 after geologists warned of increasing instability. One person remains missing, and many of the village’s 300 residents now face the grim reality that their homes may be lost forever.
A Village Swallowed by the Mountains
Blatten sits in the picturesque Lötschental Valley in the Swiss Alps. For weeks, scientists monitored deep cracks in the glacier looming above. When the collapse came, it thundered into the valley, carrying with it an avalanche of ice, boulders, water, and debris.
Drone footage captured the horrifying scene: a massive plume of dust swallowed the valley as the glacier’s edge fell away. The landslide even triggered a 3.1-magnitude earthquake, according to seismic data.

Though the evacuation likely saved lives, the destruction is staggering. Footage shows flattened homes, uprooted forests, and a buried riverbed, raising fears of potential flooding.

“We’ve Lost Our Village, But Not Our Heart”
Blatten’s mayor, Matthias Bellwald, described the event as “unimaginable.” Fighting back tears, he added, “We have lost our village, but not our heart. We will rebuild.”

Support is already on the way. The Swiss army’s disaster relief unit has been deployed, and President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed solidarity with displaced residents. The government has promised emergency funding to help the community remain in the region.
A Climate Wake-Up Call
Glaciologists have warned for years that climate change is accelerating glacier melt. Switzerland’s glaciers lost 10% of their volume between 2022 and 2023 alone—a shocking rate driven by rising global temperatures.
As the permafrost thaws, the “glue” holding the Alps together weakens. The result? More frequent rockfalls, mudslides, and glacial collapses like the one in Blatten.

This isn’t the first time alpine villages have faced threats. In 2023, the village of Brienz was evacuated due to a collapsing mountainside. In 2017, eight hikers died in Bondo after the region’s worst landslide in a century.
Experts like Mylène Jacquemart from ETH Zurich say it’s still difficult to link individual events directly to climate change. However, the conditions created by warming—more rain, less snow, and thawing rock—make such disasters far more likely.
What Comes Next for Blatten?

The long-term future of Blatten remains uncertain. Authorities are assessing whether nearby areas also need to evacuate, as instability continues across the region. Scientists will now study what caused the Birch Glacier to collapse so violently and what it might mean for other communities in the Alps.
The people of Blatten, though shaken, have not given up. As one local put it: “Nature is stronger than man. But we are stronger together.”
How should mountain communities prepare for these climate-driven disasters? Should more villages be permanently relocated? Let us know what you think.
