Person of Interest Speaks in Dominican Republic Tourist Case
The search for 20-year-old Sudiksha Konanki continues in the Dominican Republic. Authorities have identified Joshua Riibe, a 22-year-old university student from Minnesota, as a person of interest in the case. Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh student, was last seen on March 6 near the Riu Republica Hotel in Punta Cana.

Riibe’s Account of the Incident
Riibe recently spoke to authorities about his interactions with Konanki on the night she vanished. According to his statement, he and Konanki were waist-deep in the ocean, talking and kissing, when a large wave knocked them off balance. He said he struggled to keep them both afloat and swallowed a significant amount of water. Eventually, he managed to bring Konanki back to shore.
“When I finally reached the ground on the beach, I held her in front of me,” Riibe told officials. He said she was knee-deep in the water and walking out at an angle. He then vomited from swallowing seawater and, when he looked around, Konanki was gone. “I thought she’d grabbed her things and left,” Riibe stated.
Legal Developments and Investigation
Authorities in the Dominican Republic have restricted Riibe’s movement, preventing him from leaving the country. His passport has been seized, and he remains under police surveillance at the Riu Republica Hotel.
A March 14 statement from Dominican officials confirmed that Riibe is being questioned at the National Police’s Gender Violence Unit. He has not been charged with any crime. His legal team recently filed a habeas corpus petition to seek his release. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 18.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to analyze surveillance footage from the resort. One clip shows Riibe and Konanki leaving a bar together at 4:15 a.m. on March 6. Another video shows Riibe returning alone at 8:54 a.m., barefoot and shirtless.
Authorities and Family Responses

The Dominican Republic’s Attorney General, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, stated that all resources are being used to investigate Konanki’s disappearance. She acknowledged the distress this case has caused and assured that authorities are following all leads.
Riibe’s family insists he has fully cooperated with the investigation. They expressed concern over his treatment, claiming he is detained under irregular conditions and has undergone repeated interrogations.
Dominican President Luis Abinader addressed the case, calling it an ongoing investigation but suggesting that current evidence indicates an accidental drowning. However, authorities have not ruled out foul play.
