If you use Seasonique birth control pills, it’s time to check your package. Health Canada has issued a nationwide recall for one lot of this commonly prescribed contraceptive after a user reported two missing pills from the pack — a mistake that could increase the risk of unintended pregnancy.

Why Was Seasonique Recalled?

On May 3, 2025, Health Canada announced that Teva Canada Ltd. is voluntarily recalling one lot of Seasonique after a patient complaint. The issue? A blister pack was missing two light blue-green tablets — the active pills that help prevent pregnancy.

Seasonique follows a 91-day cycle with:

  • 84 light blue-green pills (active)
  • 7 yellow pills (low-dose estrogen)

The error was found in the active phase of the cycle. Missing these can lead to reduced contraceptive effectiveness, spotting, or irregular bleeding.

What You Should Do

If you currently take Seasonique, don’t panic — but take action.

Health Canada recommends:

  • Do not skip or stop taking your pills even if some are missing.
  • Visit your pharmacy as soon as possible for a replacement or alternative.
  • Use a backup method, like condoms, if you missed any active pills.
  • Talk to your pharmacist if you’re unsure about the pill count in your pack.
  • If you’re in between refills, continue with the next pill in sequence until you can replace the pack.

This advice is especially important because missing just one active pill can increase the chance of pregnancy.

Health Canada Is Monitoring the Situation

The health agency confirmed it is working with Teva Canada Ltd. to ensure the recall is properly implemented and that preventive steps are taken to avoid future issues. No new health risks have been identified yet, but the agency will provide updates if that changes.
