Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued for Waterloo Region and Perth County as Tornado Risk Looms in Southern Ontario

Environment Canada has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of southern Ontario, including the Region of Waterloo and northern Perth County, as unstable weather continues to sweep across the province.

The severe thunderstorm warning, issued at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, alerts residents of potential hazards including:

  • Heavy rainfall up to 50 mm per hour
  • Strong wind gusts reaching 90 km/h
  • Nickel to 2 cm-sized hail
  • Reduced visibility and flash flooding

Tornado Risk in Grey County

Earlier in the day, Environment Canada upgraded its outlook for the Hanover–Dundalk–Southern Grey County area, warning of a possible tornado as part of a fast-moving weather system. While no tornadoes have been confirmed, meteorologists tracked severe cells moving east at 35 km/h across Hope Bay, South Bruce Peninsula, and surrounding communities.

Areas Under Watch or Warning

Several other parts of Ontario remain under severe thunderstorm watches, including:

  • Southern Perth County
  • Northern Wellington County
  • Stratford
  • Kincardine
  • Goderich

These areas are at risk for large hail, torrential rain, and damaging wind gusts. Hourly rainfall rates could reach 30–50 mm.

“Take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches,” warns Environment Canada. “If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail.”

Residents are urged to stay indoors, secure outdoor objects, and avoid driving in flooded areas. Local emergency officials also advise monitoring Environment Canada alerts and local news sources for real-time updates.
