TD Bank to Close 38 Branches Across the U.S. on June 5 Amid Digital Shift and $3B Money Laundering Scandal

· · ·

TD Bank will permanently shut down 38 branches across the U.S. on June 5, 2025, as the bank continues to adjust to changing customer habits and ongoing reputation fallout from a $3 billion money laundering penalty in 2024.

The closures affect locations in at least 11 states, including New Jersey, New York, Florida, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, among others. TD Bank, which is headquartered in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, says the move comes after a network-wide evaluation and is part of a broader shift toward digital banking and cost-cutting efforts.

Why Are These TD Bank Branches Closing?

A TD Bank spokesperson told USA TODAY the closures are part of “normal business practices” and were made to better align with customer preferences. The bank said it remains committed to assisting affected customers and staff through the transition, offering services at more than 1,000 remaining branches or through digital platforms.

Despite the cuts, TD recently opened new branches in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Boston’s Nubian Square, signaling a continued focus on growth in urban areas.

TD Bank’s Ongoing Legal Troubles

These branch closures come less than a year after TD Bank pleaded guilty to federal money laundering violations, making it the largest bank in U.S. history to do so. The bank paid over $3 billion in penalties after U.S. authorities found it repeatedly ignored red flags from high-risk clients.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said TD prioritized profits over compliance, creating an environment where criminals could move funds freely without adequate oversight.

Newly appointed CEO Ray Chun pledged major reforms, calling the legal fallout the bank’s “number-one priority.”
