Wildfires Rage Across Newfoundland and Labrador: 5,000 Hectares Engulfed by Kingston Fire

· · ·

As of August 11, 2025, Newfoundland and Labrador are battling a dangerous wildfire situation. Four fires are currently out of control across the province, including the devastating Kingston fire, which has now grown to over 5,000 hectares. Despite ongoing firefighting efforts, the region faces severe challenges with dry conditions, high winds, and dangerously hot temperatures.

The Kingston Fire: An Ongoing Battle

The Kingston wildfire, located in Conception Bay North, is the largest of the four burning fires in the province. It has more than doubled in size, expanding from 3,000 hectares to over 5,000 hectares within a day. Authorities have described the fire as “challenging” due to the difficult terrain and ongoing heat, which has been pushing the fire forward.

Firefighting crews are actively working to contain the blaze, particularly along the northern and southern boundaries. Despite the efforts of water bombers, helicopters, and ground crews, the fire remains a significant threat. The southern edge of the fire is being closely monitored with a 50-person firefighting team on the ground, supported by specialized equipment.

Evacuation Orders and Alerts

Evacuations have been ordered for several areas, including Kingston, Perry’s Cove, and other communities along the Bay de Verde Peninsula. A regional state of emergency has been declared, and local authorities are working to support evacuees with transportation and resources. While some communities have been spared, there is growing concern about additional homes and structures being affected.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, as the fire is expected to continue spreading with little relief from the high temperatures and gusty winds. The provincial fire duty officer noted that the combination of wind and dry conditions makes firefighting efforts especially difficult.

The Martin Lake Fire and Labrador’s Wildfires

In addition to the Kingston fire, the Martin Lake fire is still active, though its growth has slowed. At 255 hectares, it is considered very active but is being kept in check thanks to the hard work of crews focusing on its western edge. The fire is currently about four kilometers from the Bay d’Espoir Highway, which remains open despite visible smoke.

On the island of Labrador, two wildfires are also causing concern. Located 19 km south of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, these fires are out of control but have yet to pose significant threats to nearby communities. However, the province is maintaining a heightened state of readiness as conditions continue to worsen.

Provincial Response and Assistance

To combat the fires, the Newfoundland and Labrador government is bringing in additional resources. A high-capacity helicopter from Manitoba, capable of carrying up to 1,000 gallons of water, has been deployed to assist firefighting efforts. With a contract worth $1.1 million for one week, the helicopter is expected to play a crucial role in suppressing the fires.

Alongside the Canadian Coast Guard, firefighting teams are working tirelessly to construct firebreaks, remove vegetation, and suppress flames to minimize the fire’s reach. Despite these efforts, the situation remains dire as communities brace for potential further damage.

Weather Challenges Ahead

Meteorologists warn that the weather conditions will not improve in the short term. High temperatures and gusty winds will continue, making it difficult for firefighters to contain the flames. A heat warning is still in effect, and the forecast predicts little relief until Thursday. The combination of these conditions will likely extend the fire season, creating more challenges for both residents and firefighting crews.
