Tragedy on Sturgeon Lake: Two Dead After Canoe Capsizes
A heartbreaking boating accident on Sturgeon Lake has left two men dead and a third man shaken but alive. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) confirmed the canoe carrying three men overturned on Sunday afternoon, June 8, prompting a swift response from emergency crews.

One Survivor, Two Lives Lost
Emergency services were called around 3:00 p.m. after reports came in of a capsized canoe in the Kawartha Lakes region, about 155 km northeast of Toronto. While one man managed to swim safely to shore, the other two were unable to stay afloat and tragically drowned.
Authorities said none of the three were wearing life jackets, a factor that often plays a critical role in boating fatalities.
Safety Warnings Renewed
The OPP, along with their Marine and Aviation Units, and City of Kawartha Lakes Fire and EMS, launched a search and recovery operation. After recovering the two bodies, officials renewed their warning: wearing a life jacket can save your life.
According to the OPP, capsizing and falling overboard remain the leading causes of boating deaths. They also noted that alcohol consumption and changing water conditions can further increase the danger on the water.

While there were no reported storms or high winds at the time, investigators are reviewing weather data and other factors that may have contributed to the canoe capsizing.
Sturgeon Lake is a popular spot for summer recreation. This tragedy underscores the risks that come with boating without proper safety precautions.

I am currently in Dhaka, Bangladesh. I heard the news from someone whose brother was a close childhood friend of both men. One was a Boeing 787 pilot of the national carrier Bangladesh Biman which operates a twice-weekly flight out of Toronto Pearson. The other was a prominent member of the Bangladesh garment exporting industry. They were holidaying in Canada. According to a Dhaka newspaper report the wife and daughter of one of the victims was filming them when the canoe capsized. Their bodies are being flown back to Bangladesh for burial.
I thought local readers might be interested.
