The incident occurred just after 3 p.m. on May 29, when the victim was outside her home on Lynn Heights Drive near Fairport Road. According to Durham Regional Police, the boy approached the woman and stabbed her in an unprovoked attack that was partially captured on video.

Emergency Alert Issued as Police Launched Manhunt

After the attack, the suspect fled east into a nearby wooded area, prompting a large-scale manhunt that included helicopters, drones, and specialized units. An emergency alert was issued at 5:40 p.m., urging residents in the area to shelter in place.

Durham Police Chief Peter Moreira later confirmed that the 13-year-old male from Pickering had been arrested without incident just before 9 p.m.

“We are lifting the public shelter in place and there is no longer a danger to the public,” said Chief Moreira.

Victim Died in Hospital

The woman was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre, where she later died of her injuries. Her name and exact age have not been released.

“She was doing nothing but whatever one would do in front of their own home,” said Moreira. “This is an unthinkable tragedy that should not have happened.”

At this stage, police have not confirmed whether the victim and the suspect knew each other. The motive remains unknown, and investigators are continuing to examine surveillance footage and speak with witnesses.

Community in Shock

Residents expressed disbelief at the violent nature of the attack, especially given the age of the suspect.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Tyler Dunstan, a local resident. “The whole neighbourhood is friendly… It’s terrifying.”

Due to the investigation and the shelter-in-place alert, the City of Pickering temporarily closed all public facilities, including libraries and community centres. They are expected to reopen following the arrest.

Youth Criminal Justice Act Applies

Because of the suspect’s age, his identity cannot be released under Canada’s Youth Criminal Justice Act. Charges have not yet been officially announced, but police confirmed that the homicide unit is leading the investigation.

Should Canada revisit how it handles serious crimes involving youth under the age of 14? What protections or consequences feel right in cases like this?
