Hot Air Balloon Tragedy in Brazil Claims 8 Lives
A hot air balloon tragedy in Santa Catarina, Brazil, on June 21, 2025, has left eight people dead and 13 others injured. The balloon, carrying 21 passengers, caught fire mid-air and plummeted to the ground near Praia Grande, a popular tourist destination known for its hot air balloon rides.

Incident Details
According to Jorginho Mello, the governor of Santa Catarina, the fire started in the basket of the balloon. The pilot, one of the survivors, reported that a backup burner ignited, causing the fire. In an attempt to save passengers, the pilot began to lower the balloon. As the fire spread, he instructed the passengers to jump from the balloon when it was close to the ground. Tragically, some passengers did not make it out in time, and the balloon eventually crashed.
Videos captured by onlookers show smoke billowing from the balloon and flames engulfing the basket. Two passengers were seen falling from the balloon before it rapidly deflated, sending it to the ground in flames. The crash led to the separation of the basket from the balloon just before impact.
