Emergency Landing in Iowa After Passenger Tries to Open Plane Door Mid-Flight
A SkyWest flight operating as a Delta Connection was forced to make an emergency landing in Iowa on Thursday, July 17, after a passenger allegedly attempted to open an emergency exit door mid-flight and got into a physical altercation with a flight attendant.

What Happened Midair?
Flight 3612, traveling from Omaha, Nebraska, to Detroit, was about 20 miles from Cedar Rapids when the in-flight disturbance escalated. According to the pilot’s communication with air traffic control, the suspect was “in a fight with our flight attendant right now, trying to open the emergency exit.”
The plane, an Embraer E175LR, safely diverted to Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids. On landing, police boarded the aircraft and arrested the passenger, identified as Mario Nikprelaj, 23, from Nebraska.
Multiple Charges Filed
Initially, Nikprelaj faced state charges including:
- Disorderly conduct
- Assault
- First-degree harassment
- Possession of prescription medication
- Tax stamp violation
However, these state charges were later dropped after the case moved to federal court, where Nikprelaj now faces a charge of interference with flight crew members and attendants. According to the federal complaint, he threatened to kill a flight attendant during the struggle.

The crew alerted the captain, who called for help from fellow passengers. Three passengers helped restrain Nikprelaj until the aircraft landed. In total, 67 passengers and four crew members were on board during the incident.
A video shows Nikprelaj being escorted off the plane by law enforcement after the emergency landing.
SkyWest and FBI Respond

SkyWest issued a statement saying it maintains zero tolerance for unruly behavior, emphasizing that “safety for our customers and crew is our top priority.”
The FBI, now leading the investigation, confirmed the seriousness of in-air threats. “We work with our partners to address crimes occurring on commercial aircraft that endanger the safety of passengers, flight crews, and flight attendants,” the agency said.
