Blue Jays Shut Out Giants as Depth Shines in Historic Win | July 2025
The Toronto Blue Jays wasted no time making a statement after the All-Star break, shutting out the San Francisco Giants 4–0 on Friday night at Rogers Centre. Backed by Chris Bassitt’s masterful outing and timely contributions from unlikely heroes, the Jays reminded everyone why they sit atop the AL East for the first time this late in the season since 1993.

Bassitt Dazzles in Historic Outing
Chris Bassitt (10–4) scattered 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings without surrendering a run—a feat no MLB pitcher has accomplished since 2015. He struck out five and didn’t issue a single walk. His performance helped the Blue Jays improve to 33–16 at home and notch their seventh shutout of the season.
The sellout crowd of 41,339 showed their appreciation, giving Bassitt a standing ovation as he exited in the seventh with two runners on. Lefty Brendon Little promptly struck out both batters he faced to preserve the shutout, while Yariel Rodríguez and Jeff Hoffman closed out the eighth and ninth innings.
Unexpected Bats Get it Done
The Jays didn’t need a home run barrage—just a four-run second inning fueled by hustle and smart at-bats. Rookie Joey Loperfido ripped an RBI double, Nathan Lukes chipped in with an RBI single, and Will Wagner, Toronto’s No. 9 hitter, delivered the biggest blow: a two-run double off veteran Justin Verlander.
None of those names were guaranteed roster spots in April. Now, they’re making all the difference.

“We’ve built a culture where everyone contributes,” said Bo Bichette postgame. “It’s exciting to see guys step up, especially the ones who weren’t expected to be here.”
Verlander’s Struggles Continue
Justin Verlander’s night was rough. The three-time Cy Young winner allowed nine hits and four earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings, marking his shortest outing of the year. He fell to 0–8 on the season, and his winless streak has now reached 16 starts, one shy of the Giants franchise record.
Ironically, this was Verlander’s first start in Toronto since no-hitting the Jays in 2019. This time, they flipped the script.
Pitching Injuries Loom Ahead of Trade Deadline
Despite the win, injury concerns continue to cloud the Jays’ outlook. Yimi Garcia is now dealing with elbow nerve symptoms. Bowden Francis has been shut down with shoulder issues. Ryan Burr is out for the year after opting for shoulder surgery. And Anthony Santander, a recent addition, is undergoing evaluation in Toronto.

Manager John Schneider admitted the timing was tough. “You never want these things to pile up,” he said. “But this team has found a way to respond every time. Next man up.”
And respond they did—again.
What do you think the Blue Jays should focus on before the trade deadline—pitching depth or more bats?
