Ottawa’s First Ironman Competition to Shut Down Major Roads This Civic Holiday Weekend

· · · · ·

Ottawa will host its first-ever Ironman triathlon this Sunday, August 4, and while the event will bring in over 2,500 athletes from across the globe, it will also come with significant road and bridge closures throughout the capital region.

What Is Ironman Canada–Ottawa?

The event is part of the VinFast Ironman North America Series and includes a 226-kilometre course:

  • 3.8 km swim at Britannia Beach
  • 180 km bike ride across Ottawa and Gatineau
  • 42.2 km run ending near the National Gallery of Canada

This prestigious race offers qualifying spots for the 2026 Ironman World Championship.

When and Where Will the Race Happen?

The competition kicks off Sunday at 6 a.m. at Britannia Beach. The swim is followed by a multi-loop bike course through scenic parkways and a marathon that ends on Murray Street, downtown Ottawa. Athletes have until midnight to complete the race.

Transition zones are located at Britannia Park and Major’s Hill Park, while Confederation Park will host the Ironman Village, athlete check-ins, briefings, and post-race celebrations through Monday.
