Secret Service Requests River Level Raise for JD Vance’s Birthday Kayak Trip
U.S. Vice President JD Vance’s recent birthday kayaking trip on the Little Miami River in Ohio has sparked controversy after it was revealed that the U.S. Secret Service had requested the river’s water level be raised to ensure safe navigation for Vance’s security detail. This request came just ahead of his 41st birthday on August 2.

Secret Service Steps In for Safety
The U.S. Secret Service explained the decision to increase water flow from Caesar Creek Lake. The goal was to allow motorized boats and emergency teams to operate safely. This was important while they accompanied Vice President Vance on the water. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed that the increase in outflow, which started on August 1, followed standard procedures. They assured that this measure would not affect water levels upstream or downstream, and local stakeholders had been notified beforehand.
Vice President Vance’s spokesperson, Taylor Van Kirk, explained the situation. She said the Vice President was unaware of the request to change the river’s flow. “The Secret Service often takes protective actions without informing the Vice President or his staff,” she said.
Political Backlash and Comparisons

This incident has raised eyebrows, with critics questioning the use of taxpayer funds for the operation. Richard W. Painter, former White House ethics lawyer, called it “outrageous” for the Army Corps of Engineers to increase water levels just to accommodate a kayaking trip. Democratic House member Eric Swalwell took to social media, quipping, “A rising tide only lifts JD Vance’s boat.”
The situation is reminiscent of a similar incident involving Al Gore, then U.S. Vice President, in 1999. When Gore kayaked on the Connecticut River, a dam was opened. This released four billion gallons of water for safety reasons. The action led to political pushback.

Other Controversial Trips
Vance, who was born and raised in Ohio, has found himself at the center of controversy during previous trips as well. While in Italy, authorities closed the Roman Colosseum to the public for a private family tour. Similarly, during a visit to India, they closed the Taj Mahal for Vance’s family, frustrating other tourists.
Vance is currently on a trip to the U.K., where he met with Foreign Secretary David Lammy before heading off for a family vacation in the Cotswolds.
