Free & Paid Things To Do in Toronto This January 2026
Everyone claims they are doing Dry January until they see the drink specials on Ossington. If you are actually trying to leave your condo this month, this list of Free & Paid Things To Do in Toronto This January 2026 is your playbook. I dug through the noise to find the actual good stuff so you do not have to freeze on a street corner checking your phone. I have also included a few spots just outside the city boundaries for when you need a break from the TTC.
Note: always double-check the official websites before you head out. Things change fast in this city. While admission might be free, you usually still have to pay for the good snacks.
Free Fun Events
Mayor’s Skating Party 2026

It is essentially a rite of passage to freeze your face off at one of these. I usually skip the crowds at Nathan Phillips Square and head to Colonel Samuel Smith Park instead. The figure-8 ice trail through the trees feels way less chaotic than the downtown rinks and the scenery is unbeatable. Plus the hot chocolate is free, and honestly, free tastes better.
- When: January 4, 2026
- Where: McCowan District Park (150 Mccowan Rd) | North Toronto Memorial Community Centre (200 Eglinton Ave W) | Colonel Samuel Smith Park, 65 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive | Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen St W)
- Tickets: Free admission
- Website: https://www.toronto.ca
- Best for: Families, casual skaters, and people who enjoy community events.
Jamaica in January 2026
Stackt Market usually feels like a wind tunnel this time of year, but this event actually warms it up. The smell of jerk chicken hits you before you even enter the gates. Grab the curry goat early before it sells out. If you are competitive like me, the Bingo Jamdown is surprisingly intense and worth joining for the prizes.
- When: January 17, 2026
- Where: Stackt Market (28 Bathurst Street, Toronto)
- Tickets: Free admission (RSVP recommended)
- Instagram: @jamaicaneatsmagazine
- Best for: Food lovers, culture fans, and families who enjoy lively events.
The Distillery Winter Village

Look, we all know the Distillery is a tourist trap, but it is our pretty tourist trap. The trick is going on a weekday or before 4:00 PM when entry is free. Save that admission money and spend it on a Spicy Mayan Hot Chocolate at Soma because the powdered stuff at the outdoor kiosks does not compare.

- When: Until January 4, 2026
- Where: 55 Mill Street, Toronto
- Tickets: Entry is free 10:00am-4:00pm. Tickets are required for entry after 4:00pm daily.
- Website: https://www.thedistillerywintervillage.com
- Best for: Couples, families, and people who enjoy holiday markets.
Cavalcade of Lights

If you missed the holiday lights, the arches over Nathan Phillips Square are still up. I recommend bringing your own skates if you have them because the rental line moves slower than the Gardner at rush hour. It is a solid spot for a cheap date if you grab a beavertail afterwards to warm up your hands.
- When: Until January 7, 2026
- Where: Nathan Phillips Square (100 Queen St W, Toronto)
- Tickets: Free admission
- Website: https://www.toronto.ca
- Best for: Families, winter walkers, and people who enjoy festive displays
Union Winter Presented by TD

I actually prefer the roller rink at Union over the ice rinks because you do not have to bundle up as much. It is covered, so snow does not ruin the vibe. Go for the DJ nights if you want to show off your crossover moves without freezing. It is surprisingly spacious for being right in the middle of the commute hub.
- When: Until January 18, 2026
- Where: Union Station (65 Front St. W., Toronto)
- Tickets: Free admission (Advance registration for Roller Express recommended)
- Website: https://torontounion.ca
- Best for: Roller skaters, families, and friends who enjoy active meetups.
The Junction’s Window Wonderland

This is the best excuse to walk down Dundas West. Download the AR app before you leave your house so you are not wasting data on the sidewalk. I usually grab a flat white at Full Stop and wander from Keele to Quebec Ave watching the murals move. The animation on the side of the buildings really pops at night.
- When: Until February 1, 2026
- Where: Streets of The Junction
- Tickets: Free admission
- Website: https://torontojunction.ca
- Best for: Art fans, casual explorers, and families who enjoy creative walks.
Hangar Skate at YZD

The hangar offers way more elbow room than the downtown rinks and the industrial ceiling looks cool in photos. It is free, which is rare for indoor-style skating in this city.

- When: Until February 16, 2026
- Where: YZD (34 Hanover Road Toronto)
- Tickets: Free admission
- Website: https://www.yzd.ca
- Best for: Families, beginners, and people who enjoy casual outdoor skating.
Skate by the Lake

The Natrel Rink at Harbourfront is iconic, but the wind off the lake is no joke. Dress warmer than you think you need to. I love skating here at sunset when the light hits the water, but I always run into the Lakeside Eats building immediately after to thaw my toes. If you live near Downsview, this is a no-brainer.
- When: Until March 1, 2026
- Where: Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West Toronto)
- Tickets: Free admission
- Website: https://harbourfrontcentre.com
- Best for: Families, skaters, and people who enjoy outdoor winter activities.
Paid & Ticketed Events
Exhibition Place Resolution Run 2026

I am not usually one for running on New Year’s Day, but the route through Exhibition Place is flat and fast. You get a surprisingly decent jacket with registration which justifies the $65 fee. It finishes under the Princes’ Gates which makes for a great finish line photo.
- When: January 1, 2026
- Where: Enercare Centre, Princes’ Boulevard, Toronto
- Registration: $65
- Website: https://raceroster.com
- Best for: Runners, walkers, and people who enjoy active outings.
All Star Standup Comedy at Second City Toronto

The new location at One York is slick. The “All Star” shows are reliable because they bring out the seasoned pros rather than the rookies. Order the nachos for the table. They are unnecessarily large and perfect for stress-eating while you hope the comedian does not pick on you.
- When: January 3, 2026
- Where: Second City (110 Harbour St, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://www.secondcity.com
- Best for: Comedy fans, date nights, and friends who enjoy live shows.
PsyHibit
This is for when you are bored of standard galleries. The two-level studio on Commercial Road gets fully decked out in psychedelic visuals. Make sure your phone is charged because every corner is a photo trap. It feels more like a rave without the sweating than a museum.
- When: January 10, 2026
- Where: Motorista Studio (25 Commercial Rd, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://psyhibit.com
- Best for: Art lovers, curious explorers, and people who enjoy creative events.
Ballet of Lights: Sleeping Beauty in a Sparkling Show

If you need to entertain kids but refuse to watch Frozen again, take them to the Young People’s Theatre. The LED costumes are actually cool enough to keep adults awake and the lighting effects make the ballet feel modern.
- When: January 11, 2026
- Where: Young People’s Theatre (165 Front Street East, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://balletoflights.com
- Best for: Ballet fans, families, and people who enjoy stage shows.
Toronto Golf & Travel Show

It is the middle of winter and I miss the links. This is where I go to hit balls into a simulator and pretend it is July. Go straight to the demo range to test the new drivers before the crowds hog the bays. You can usually snag some discounted green fees for the upcoming season here too.
- When: January 30-February 1, 2026
- Where: International Centre (6900 Airport Rd, Mississauga)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://www.torontogolfshow.com
- Best for: Golfers, early planners, and people who enjoy sports expos.
Winterlicious 2026

Locals love to complain about the service during Winterlicious, but the value is undeniable if you pick the right spots. I focus on the lunch menus at the higher-end spots in Yorkville. You get the same atmosphere and similar food for a fraction of the dinner price. Book now because the prime 7:00 PM slots at the top restaurants vanish fast.
- When: January 30-February 12, 2026
- Where: Participating restaurants across Toronto
- Price: Varies
- Website: https://www.toronto.ca
- Best for: Food fans, date nights, and groups who enjoy dining events.
Mythos at Illuminarium Toronto
It is basically a massive projection party in the Distillery District. The visuals cover the walls and floor so you feel like you are inside the story. It is a solid pick if you want to feel immersed without having to wear a VR headset.
- When: Until January 4, 2026
- Where: Illuminarium Toronto (28 Distillery Lane, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://www.illuminarium.com
- Best for: Families, kids, and people who enjoy storytelling exhibitions.
Concerts
Halsey – Back To Badlands Tour

History is hands down the best sounding venue in the city right now. I like standing near the back bar on the main floor. You get a perfect view of the stage and easy access to drinks without being crushed in the mosh pit.
- When: January 9-11, 2026
- Where: History Toronto (1663 Queen St E, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://www.iamhalsey.com
- Best for: Halsey fans, concert lovers, and groups who enjoy live music.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in Concert

Watch the full film in HD while an orchestra and choir perform the score live. The sound adds extra weight to each scene. It works well for those wanting something different from free events in Toronto today.
- When: January 23-24, 2026
- Where: Meridian Hall (1 Front St E, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://www.lordoftheringsinconcert.com

Distant Worlds: music from FINAL FANTASY

The orchestra performs music from Final Fantasy XIV and XVI with special appearances by members of the creative team. Vocals and storytelling elements add to the night.

- Where: Meridian Hall (1 Front St E, Toronto)
- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://www.ffdistantworlds.com
- Best for: Gamers, orchestra fans, and people who enjoy themed concerts.
Ghost – Skeletour 2026 World Tour

Ghost returns with a night of dramatic staging and heavy metal that draws a passionate crowd. The show keeps a steady surge of energy from start to finish.

- Tickets: Click here.
- Website: https://ghost-official.com
