The Attack

Chinoso was attacked by a 16-year-old student wearing a long black trench coat and a mask with a long beak. At first, Chinoso thought it was a costume, but he was shocked when the attacker pulled out a jagged sword and lunged at him. Despite being badly injured, Chinoso managed to grab the sword and flee to the school office, where he sought help.

The attacker’s intentions were believed to be much more sinister, with police suggesting that the assault was only stopped due to the swift response of school security and law enforcement. Chinoso was rushed to Winnipeg, where he underwent over 10 hours of emergency surgery.

A Family’s Terrifying Ordeal

Chinoso’s mother, Helen Onuke, recalls the moment her son went into surgery, with his blood pressure dropping dangerously low. She shared how difficult it was to watch her son undergo life-saving procedures, noting that no parent should ever face such a situation.

The Onuke family believes the attack may have been racially motivated. They are calling for more action from the school, city, and province. Despite the attack, Chinoso is determined to return to school and pursue his passions. However, he admits his return won’t feel the same.

Recovery and Support

Chinoso is recovering at home and will need six weeks of rest and rehabilitation to fully regain the use of his hands. His injuries have left him with bandaged hands and casts. For now, he’s using voice-controlled technology to help with everyday tasks. While he’s focused on recovery, he is eager to get back to playing basketball, football, and volunteering in his community.

Messages of support from the community, including notes on the school sidewalk, have comforted Chinoso and his family. However, his mother is concerned about the lack of sufficient support from local authorities and is calling for justice to prevent such an attack from happening again.

The Investigation

The attacker, a 16-year-old student, has been charged with multiple offenses, including attempted murder. Police have confirmed that the suspect and Chinoso knew each other before the attack, though the motive is still under investigation. The school was placed under lockdown, and police responded quickly to subdue the attacker, preventing further harm.
