Class-Action Lawsuit Launched Against Monsanto’s Roundup Weed Killer in Canada
A group has launched a new nationwide class-action lawsuit against Monsanto Canada ULC (now Bayer CropScience Inc.), Monsanto Company, and Bayer Inc., the companies behind the popular herbicide brand Roundup. The lawsuit alleges that exposure to Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides causes Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL), a cancer affecting the bone marrow, blood, and lymphatic system.

Allegations of Misleading Safety Claims
The class action claims that the companies misrepresented the safety of their products and the active ingredient, glyphosate, failing to adequately warn consumers about the potential risk of developing NHL from exposure. The representative plaintiff, diagnosed with NHL at just 17 years old in 1995, attributes his diagnosis and ongoing health problems to glyphosate. He claims to have used Roundup products extensively during his youth, which he believes directly led to his condition.
Damages Sought
The plaintiff is seeking non-pecuniary damages for intangible losses, such as pain, suffering, and mental health impacts, totaling $1 billion. Additionally, he is seeking $100 million in damages under the Ontario Family Law Act (and similar legislation in other provinces) for the family members of affected individuals. Punitive damages of $100 million are also being sought to hold the companies accountable.
Who Is Eligible for the Class-Action Lawsuit?
The class-action includes Canadians who meet the following criteria:
- Had significant exposure to Roundup before December 8, 2023 (defined as using Roundup more than twice in a 12-month period or more than 10 times in their lifetime).
- Were diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma before December 8, 2023, after exposure to Roundup.
Also included in the lawsuit are the living spouses, children, grandchildren, parents, grandparents, or siblings of individuals diagnosed with NHL due to Roundup exposure.
The law firms involved in the case stress that eligible individuals do not need to take any action at this stage to join the lawsuit.
Company’s Defense
In response to the lawsuit, the defendants, including Bayer and Monsanto, vigorously deny that glyphosate-based herbicides, including Roundup, cause Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The companies argue that their products are safe when used as directed.
What’s Next?
If you meet the criteria outlined, you do not need to take any immediate action. The law firms handling the case are following further developments as the class action progresses. Those affected by the situation should stay informed and reach out if they have questions.
