Doug Ford Signals Early Ontario Election Amid Trump’s Tariff Threats
Premier Doug Ford has hinted at the possibility of an early Ontario election. He says a strong public mandate is crucial to address potential economic challenges from U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs.
Trump’s Tariff Plans Spark Concern
On his first day as the 47th President of the United States, Trump unveiled plans to create an agency focused on taxing foreign countries. Though his inaugural address did not specifically mention Canada, Ford stated, “Make no mistake about it. He’s coming for us.”
Trump had initially promised a 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods. However, reports suggest he may first investigate trade policies before implementing sweeping measures. Despite the delay, Ford believes tariffs are inevitable. He estimates these tariffs could cost Ontario up to 500,000 jobs and require billions in government spending to safeguard the economy.
Ford Pushes for a Mandate
Ford has suggested that responding to U.S. tariffs effectively requires a fresh mandate from Ontario voters. “The people, not politicians, provide a mandate,” Ford said, emphasizing the importance of public input for any major financial decisions.
Ontario’s next provincial election is scheduled for June 2026. However, Ford’s Progressive Conservatives are currently leading in the polls, with 41% of voter support compared to 32% for Bonnie Crombie’s Liberals.

Proposed Retaliation: LCBO and Provincial Measures
Ford has taken a strong stance on potential retaliatory actions. He directed the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) to remove all U.S.-made alcohol from its shelves if tariffs are imposed. “They will feel the pain,” Ford declared during the Rural Ontario Municipal Association Conference.
The province also hinted at other possible measures, including new taxes on U.S.-made goods and potentially limiting electricity exports to the U.S. Ford recalled Canada’s previous response to Trump’s tariffs in 2018, which included targeting bourbon and other American products.
Opposition and Public Reaction
Ontario’s opposition parties have expressed support for anti-tariff measures without requiring an election. However, Ford reiterated that decisions involving billions of taxpayer dollars should involve direct public approval.
Polls show that while Ford’s Progressive Conservatives maintain a solid lead, 26% of voters remain undecided. Experts suggest that these numbers could shift significantly if an election is called.

Looking Ahead
As the U.S. administration evaluates its trade policies, Ontario faces uncertainty. Ford remains firm that any significant response to potential tariffs must reflect the will of the people.
