Fall Happened Outside City Hall

The incident occurred as Horwath was descending stairs outside Hamilton City Hall when strong winds—gusting up to 100 km/h—swept through the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. Weather alerts were in effect throughout the day, and the high winds left downed trees and power outages across the region.

Surgery Underway, Recovery at Home Planned

Horwath’s office initially described the situation as an “accident,” but later confirmed the nature of her injuries. She will be recovering at home for the rest of the week, pending medical advice.

The mayor remains in good spirits and is in regular communication with her team. Should a short medical leave be required, her office says leadership continuity will be maintained.

Community Sends Well Wishes

Horwath’s team expressed gratitude for the supportive messages coming in from the community. The former Ontario NDP leader was elected Hamilton’s mayor in October 2022 after representing Hamilton Centre for years at Queen’s Park.

Just hours before the accident, she posted on social media to congratulate federal election candidates, including new Liberal leader Mark Carney, and emphasized her commitment to collaborating on housing, transit, and community safety.
