Twenty years after Hamlet (solo) premiered at Theatre Passe Muraille, Raoul Bhaneja is returning to the same Toronto venue with the production that has followed him through more than 150 performances in 25 cities.

The limited run plays November 6 to 8, 2026, in the Backspace at 16 Ryerson Avenue. It is both an anniversary engagement and a fundraiser, with proceeds supporting the Andy McKim Endowment Fund for New Works, which helps artists develop new Canadian theatre at Theatre Passe Muraille.

A One-Actor Hamlet Built in the Backspace

Bhaneja performs all 17 characters in Shakespeare’s tragedy without a set or costumes. The spare format leaves the language, physical shifts and changes in voice to carry the production. Robert Ross Parker directs.

The project’s connection to Theatre Passe Muraille predates its 2006 premiere. Bhaneja first read the work there in 2000 and returned for a workshop in 2002. In the release, he describes the Backspace as part of the show’s “DNA,” even after tours took it to the Arctic Circle, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and venues across North America and Europe.

The production won Bhaneja the 2022 Best Actor Award at New York’s United Solo Festival and received the Montreal English Critics’ Circle Award for Best Visiting Production. It was also nominated for a Calgary Critics’ Award for Best Solo Show.

The Return Supports New Canadian Theatre

The fundraising run directs its proceeds to the Andy McKim Endowment Fund for New Works. McKim served as Theatre Passe Muraille’s artistic director from 2007 to 2019 and was a long-time advocate for artist-led creation and world premieres.

The endowment is reserved for artists and the development of new work rather than general administration, marketing or operating expenses. Its principal remains invested, while annual earnings support projects at the theatre. That structure turns the three-day return of an established production into ongoing support for work still taking shape.

The choice also closes a loop for Bhaneja and Parker. Theatre Passe Muraille gave Hamlet (solo) room to develop before it began touring. Two decades later, the production is returning to help create that kind of opportunity for another generation of artists.
