Adrian Simancas was kayaking near Punta Arenas with his father, Dell Simancas, when the massive whale surfaced and engulfed him. Adrian described feeling an overwhelming force lifting him before being submerged in darkness.
“I felt something blue and white moving past my face,” he said. “I didn’t understand what was happening. Then I went under and thought I had been swallowed.”
His father, who was in another kayak, recorded the moment. At first, Dell did not see Adrian and feared the worst. “For three seconds, I couldn’t find him. Then he shot up to the surface, followed by his packraft,” Dell said.
A Close Call
Despite the dramatic experience, Adrian was unharmed. The whale quickly released him, likely realizing he was not food. Experts explain that humpback whales primarily feed on krill and small fish.
