Southend Airport Closed After Plane Crash Sparks Massive Fireball
Southend Airport has been shut “until further notice” after a small aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff, erupting into what eyewitnesses described as a massive fireball. The crash occurred at around 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, 2025, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and aviation investigators.

Plane Crashed Moments After Takeoff
The aircraft involved was a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, operated by Dutch company Zeusch Aviation. According to flight data, it had flown from Athens to Pula, Croatia, before heading to Southend, with a planned return to Lelystad Airport in the Netherlands that evening.
Eyewitnesses said the plane banked unusually to the left just seconds after takeoff, then appeared to invert and crash head-first into the ground, triggering a violent explosion.
John Johnson, who was at the airport with his wife and children, told the BBC he saw the plane power down the runway before it lifted off and began an abrupt turn. “Within seconds, the plane inverted and hit the ground. There was a huge fireball,” he said.
Emergency Services Respond Immediately
Essex Police, East of England Ambulance Service, Essex County Fire and Rescue, and the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) responded swiftly. Witnesses reported feeling a “big heatwave” from the explosion and saw thick black smoke rising over the airport.

Four ambulances and an air ambulance were sent to the scene. However, as of now, officials have not confirmed the number of casualties.
The airport remains closed, and authorities have urged passengers scheduled to travel to contact their airlines directly. A police cordon remains in place as investigations continue overnight.
Investigation Underway
Zeusch Aviation confirmed that its aircraft, designated SUZ1, crashed and stated that they are fully cooperating with authorities. The company operates medical evacuation, repatriation, and transplant flights. They reportedly configured the aircraft for medical missions and private charters.
Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin of Essex Police said they are working closely with the AAIB to establish what happened. He urged the public to avoid the area and use the major incident portal instead of emergency lines for updates or reports.

Shocked Community Reacts
Local businesses and sports clubs near the airport also felt the impact. Some were temporarily evacuated, while others watched from a distance as the smoke rose. Pete Jones, chair of Westcliff Rugby Club, said their event of 250 people continued after police reassessed the situation.
At Rochford Hundred Golf Club, bartender James Philpott said he felt an intense wave of heat before seeing the fireball. “People were shocked and some ran toward the scene,” he added.
Ongoing Closures and Cancellations
All flights in and out of Southend Airport have been canceled. Authorities have not provided a reopening timeline. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said her thoughts are with all involved and confirmed she is receiving regular updates.
Investigators continue their work, and they expect to release more details in the coming days. Passengers and locals are waiting for answers as officials closely monitor the scene.
What are your thoughts on how small airports should handle emergencies like this? Should safety rules be stricter?
