Passengers Evacuated on Slides After Engine Fire on WestJet Flight at Vancouver Airport
A routine landing at Vancouver Airport turned tense Saturday night when a WestJet plane arriving from Florida experienced a small engine fire after reaching the gate.

Engine Fire Sparks Emergency Evacuation
The incident involved Flight 1285 from Tampa, which landed safely around 11 p.m. WestJet spokesperson Julia Kaiser said the fire started in the tailpipe of one engine shortly after shutdown, while the aircraft was parked at the gate.
To ensure safety, the flight crew decided to evacuate the 50 remaining passengers using the onboard inflatable slides. The plane’s emergency systems quickly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Airport and Airline Respond Swiftly

Emergency crews at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) arrived shortly after the alarm sounded, but they didn’t need to intervene because the fire was already out. YVR spokesperson Chloe Reynaud confirmed they had contained the situation, which did not affect other airport operations or flight schedules.
Reynaud added that WestJet staff, emergency personnel, and airport partners worked together to reunite passengers with their baggage and offer additional assistance on-site.
Federal Investigators Involved
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has sent a team of investigators to determine the cause of the engine fire. Following protocol, WestJet has removed the affected Boeing 737 MAX 8 from service for maintenance and inspection.
The crew handled the situation effectively, but it highlights how critical safety systems and quick decisions are for protecting passengers during emergencies.
What’s Next?
As investigations continue, the airline and federal authorities will assess the situation. They will decide whether to implement additional safety measures or operational changes. For now, operations at YVR continue as normal, and all evacuated passengers are safe and accounted for.
