Strawberry Moon 2025: Canada Set to Witness the Lowest Full Moon of the Year on June 10
Canadians with a love for stargazing should mark their calendars — June’s full moon, the Strawberry Moon, is coming, and it’s bringing a rare visual treat. While it officially reaches its fullest phase in the early hours of Wednesday, June 11 at 3:45 a.m. EDT, the best time to catch it will be Tuesday evening, June 10, just as the sun sets.

Why This Strawberry Moon Is Special
This year’s Strawberry Moon isn’t just the last full moon of spring. It’s also set to be the lowest full moon of 2025 for skywatchers in the Northern Hemisphere, including across Canada. Thanks to the angle of the Earth and the moon’s position opposite the sun, the moon will appear to hover close to the horizon, giving it that large, glowing look many moon lovers adore.
In fact, from cities like Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, and Calgary, you can expect the moon to rise in the southeastern sky during dusk, drift low across the southern horizon, and set by dawn.
Adding to the view? Antares, a fiery-red star in the constellation Scorpius, will be shining just above the moon — a cosmic pairing that makes the experience even more picture-perfect.
A Low Moon, Far From the Sun
This particular full moon will also be one of the farthest from the sun all year, due to Earth’s elliptical orbit. We’re nearing aphelion — the time when Earth is farthest from the sun — on July 3. Because a full moon always sits opposite the sun, this one will also be sitting at its most distant solar point, about 152,200 kilometers away.

What’s in a Name?
Despite its fruity name, the Strawberry Moon doesn’t actually look pink or red. The name comes from Indigenous cultures and farmers’ almanacs, referencing the time when wild strawberries ripen in June.
Other traditional names include:
- Berries Ripen Moon (Algonquin)
- Green Corn Moon
- Hot Moon
- Mead Moon (English)
- Horse Moon and Rose Moon (Celtic)
No matter what you call it, Canadians from coast to coast should get outside on June 10 at dusk, find a clear view of the southeast horizon, and enjoy one of the most beautiful — and lowest-hanging — moons of the year.
