Taste of the Danforth Cancelled for Second Straight Year as Greektown Businesses Feel the Loss
For the second consecutive year, organizers have cancelled Toronto’s Taste of the Danforth, leaving Greektown’s streets without the lively mix of food, music, and community spirit that normally draws nearly a million visitors.
Funding and Logistical Challenges
The Greektown on the Danforth Business Improvement Association (BIA) says the festival will not happen in 2025 because of funding problems. Organizers don’t want local business owners to cover the full cost of running a large event. This includes expenses for security, medical services, and clean-up.
The BIA added that new bike lanes and bigger street patios have also made it harder for emergency vehicles to access the festival site.
Local restaurant owners say the financial impact is significant. For many, the event provides critical revenue that helps them through slower winter months. “That money is our back-up for the winter,” said Kamal Hosain, owner of Alexandro’s. “During the winter season, business is very slow.”
Community Disappointment
Business owners and residents alike expressed frustration over the repeated cancellation. “Every problem has a solution,” said Tom Papadatos of Cristina’s Restaurant. “Work together, make it happen rather than just cancelling it yet again.”

Councillor Paula Fletcher, who represents the area, acknowledged the disappointment and urged the BIA to develop a plan to revive the festival. “It’s the only festival not to come out of COVID,” she said. “Everybody’s rooting for the Taste of the Danforth.”
Hopes for 2026 Revival
The festival began in 1993. COVID-19 restrictions led to its cancellation in 2020 and 2021. It returned in 2023 but has now missed two consecutive summers. The BIA says they are discussing a possible return in 2026, though it may look different from past years.
For now, Greektown businesses and residents are without the summer tradition that celebrated Toronto’s Greek heritage, boosted the local economy, and brought the community together.
