Tax Incentives for Canadian Students: A Guide to Maximizing Savings
Canadian students often face significant expenses, from tuition and housing to food and other essentials. To help, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) offers several tax incentives for Canadian students that ease financial pressures.

Key Tax-Free Payments
GST/HST Credit
The GST/HST credit provides a tax-free quarterly payment of up to $533 annually. This benefit supports individuals and families with low to modest incomes by offsetting taxes paid. Eligibility criteria include being at least 19 years old and a Canadian resident for tax purposes. The next payment is scheduled for April 4.
Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR)
The CCR helps offset federal pollution pricing with tax-free quarterly payments. Residents in participating provinces, such as Alberta and Ontario, can receive varying amounts. For example, a family of four may get $450 in Alberta or $280 in Ontario. The next payment will arrive on April 15.
Canada Child Benefit (CCB)
Eligible families raising children under 18 can receive monthly CCB payments. The benefit increased in July 2024, with children under six now receiving up to $7,787 annually. Children aged six to 17 can receive up to $6,570 annually. The next payment is set for February 20.
Tax Credits for Students
Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
The DTC reduces income tax for eligible individuals. It offers up to $9,872, with an additional $5,758 available for those under 18.
Tuition Tax Credit
Students can reduce their taxes by claiming tuition costs. Unused amounts can also be transferred or carried forward for future use.
Interest Paid on Student Loans
You can claim a non-refundable tax credit for interest paid on government student loans, which helps reduce taxable income.
Moving Expenses
Students moving at least 40 km closer to their school can deduct related costs, including flights, movers, and temporary housing.
Benefits for International Students
International students with sufficient residential ties to Canada may also qualify for these incentives. The CRA considers newcomers eligible for tax benefits in their first year of residency. A social insurance number is required to apply.
Stay Informed to Maximize Savings
These tax incentives offer meaningful financial relief for Canadian and international students. Review the CRA guidelines to determine your eligibility and take full advantage of the benefits available.
