Toronto Couple Wins $50K Lotto 6/49 Prize, Plans to Put it Toward a Home
A Toronto husband and wife are celebrating a $50,000 windfall after winning a Lotto 6/49 Super Draw prize — and they already know where it’s going. The couple plans to use their lottery winnings as a down payment on a home.

Quick Stop Turns Into Life-Changing Moment
Lilian Barreto Pontes De Matos and Alexander De Matos scored the prize during the Feb. 15 Lotto 6/49 Super Draw. Their winning ticket was purchased at a Shell gas station on Britannia Road East in Mississauga.
Alexander, who made the ticket check on a whim, had stopped by a convenience store just to get a quarter for a shopping cart.
“When I realized we’d won, I was shocked, and my brain went fuzzy,” he said in a statement released by the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). “I wanted to run straight home, but knew my wife would be upset if I didn’t get the groceries.”
Lilian laughed when she heard the story, joking that she would have been mad if he had forgotten her rice.

Tears, Hugs, and a Big Surprise
After finishing the grocery run, Alexander broke the news at home. Lilian’s reaction was anything but calm.
“I screamed, I cried, and jumped all around,” she said. “My heart was beating so fast. I cry every time I think about it.”
The couple, parents of one, have been playing the lottery together for five years, always choosing their own numbers. They buy several tickets a month and enjoy the ritual together.
Winnings Will Help Them Buy a Home
Rather than splurge, the couple plans to put the $50,000 toward a down payment on a future home. They’ve been waiting to share the big news until the cheque was in their hands.
