Toronto is facing another intense heat wave, with Environment Canada issuing a heat warning that may remain in effect through Thursday, July 17. The warning comes amid a stretch of sweltering temperatures, high humidity, and minimal overnight relief.

How Hot Is It Getting?

The city is expected to hit a high of 30°C today, but it will feel more like 37°C once humidity is factored in. Saturday could be worse, with a forecasted high of 32°C, feeling closer to 41°C with the humidex.

Even Sunday, which may bring a 60% chance of showers, won’t offer much relief, with daytime temperatures still expected to hit 30°C.

According to Environment Canada, daytime highs between 29°C and 32°C will persist throughout much of the week. Humidex values will frequently land in the 35°C to 40°C range. Nighttime lows of 19°C to 23°C will offer little comfort, especially for those without air conditioning.

Who’s at Risk?

Environment Canada warns that extreme heat can affect everyone’s health, especially:

  • Older adults
  • Young children
  • People with chronic health conditions
  • People without access to cool indoor spaces
  • Outdoor workers and those living in encampments or shelters

The City of Toronto has opened over 100 additional shelter spaces for those experiencing homelessness and confirmed that 56 of its 58 outdoor pools are open this weekend.

Tips to Stay Safe

  • Stay hydrated — drink water often, even if you’re not thirsty
  • Avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.)
  • Seek shade or air-conditioned spaces when possible
  • Check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbours
  • Never leave people or pets in parked vehicles

Toronto Public Health continues to monitor the situation. During the June heat wave, 42 heat-related emergency department visits were recorded in the city alone.

When Will It End?

Relief may be in sight by Thursday, when a weather pattern shift is expected to bring cooler air to southern Ontario. Until then, residents are urged to take precautions and check weather updates regularly.
