Evacuation Orders and Alerts

As of Sunday, August 3, 2025, the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) reported that the fire had expanded to 389 hectares. Authorities confirmed that 393 properties, mostly residential, are under evacuation order, requiring immediate evacuation. Another 238 properties are under evacuation alert, meaning residents must be prepared to leave at any time.

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has issued these orders, covering a significant area including Little Qualicum Falls Park, which contains campgrounds, trails, and picnic facilities. The fire’s progression has led to heightened safety concerns for those in the vicinity.

Boaters and Drivers Urged to Exercise Caution

In light of the ongoing firefighting efforts, officials have warned boaters to stay off Cameron, Spider, and Horne lakes. These bodies of water are crucial for firefighting aircraft, which use the lakes to refill with water. Douglas Holmes, director of the RDN’s emergency operations centre, emphasized the danger of interfering with firefighting operations, saying, “At best, it will delay the fire response, and at worst, it will lead to a very difficult and dangerous interaction.”

The warning extends to drivers on Highway 4, a major east-west route on the island. While the highway remains open, officials have advised travelers to expect potential traffic delays due to firefighting efforts. Traffic-control personnel are stationed at key locations in case immediate closures become necessary. Travelers are also advised not to stop along the highway to take pictures of the blaze.

Fire Conditions and Continued Risk

The Wesley Ridge wildfire has been difficult to contain due to its location in inaccessible terrain, with large amounts of dry timber providing ample fuel. Madison Dahl, a fire information officer with BCWS, explained that the fire will continue to produce smoke as it spreads through the forested area.

The region is also experiencing a drought, which is worsening the fire’s growth. While cooler temperatures are expected in the coming days, rain— which could help control the fire— isn’t expected until Wednesday. Even then, a significant amount of rain would be needed to make a meaningful impact on the fire’s progress.
