Ontario measles cases decline to zero in former outbreak zone
In an encouraging turn for public health, Ontario’s previously hardest-hit region has reported zero new measles infections for the first time since the surge in cases last spring. Remarkably, this milestone highlights significant progress in Ontario’s ongoing battle with the highly contagious disease. It also offers a glimmer of hope for provincial health authorities aiming to keep Ontario measles cases low.

Recent Update from Southwestern Ontario

According to data released by Public Health Ontario, the region overseen by Southwestern Public Health has not reported any new measles cases this week. Clearly, this development marks the first time since the spring surge that the area has seen a complete pause in new infections. Back in April, this region accounted for a staggering 45% of all confirmed cases in Ontario, making it the most concentrated hotspot in Canada at the time.
- Region Name: Southwestern Public Health
- Last reported cases: One new case per week in the three weeks prior
- Measles status: Local weekly reporting concluded
Ongoing Ontario measles cases in Neighboring Regions

While Southwestern Ontario has seen promising results, measles transmission remains active in other parts of the province. In the past week alone, Ontario recorded 22 new infections. Middlesex-London, a region adjacent to the former hotspot, reported nine new cases. Furthermore, smaller spikes were observed in Grand Erie, Huron Perth, and Chatham-Kent.

Tracking Ontario’s Overall Measles Trend

Public Health Ontario noted that the number of new weekly infections has generally hovered between the low 20s and 30s throughout July. Recent weekly totals include 32 and 21 cases reported in consecutive weeks. Since the outbreak began in October, the province has recorded an extensive 2,298 measles cases in total. Consequently, active tracking remains crucial.
- Total cases since October: 2,298
- Recent weekly totals: 32 (last week), 21 (week before), 11 (July 3)
Public Health Measures and Continued Vigilance

Despite the good news from Southwestern Ontario, authorities continue to stress that the measles outbreak is not over. Notably, the end of local weekly reporting does not signal the conclusion of regional vigilance. Residents are still being urged to ensure vaccinations are up to date, especially for children. With school resuming soon, immunization remains a priority to avoid future flare-ups in Ontario measles cases.

Ontario remains proactive in containing virus spread, while neighboring provinces such as Alberta and Nova Scotia are currently grappling with expanding epidemics. Encouragingly, the success in Ontario’s former hotspot could serve as a model for other regions battling similar outbreaks.
