Candlelight Vigil Unites the Town

On Sunday, residents gathered outside Walkerton District Community School for a candlelight vigil. The event became a powerful moment of collective mourning and support. Flowers, handwritten messages, and sports memorabilia now fill a growing memorial at the school.

The victims, identified by local sports groups, include Rowan McLeod and Kaydance Ford, players for the Tara Twins U18 girls softball team. Teacher and coach Matt Eckert, 33, was also among the deceased. The identities of the other two students, both 16 and 17, have not been officially released.

A Community Grieving Together

“This has left an incredibly deep scar,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “But small-town Ontario knows how to rally together in hard times. We’ll get through this.”

Students and neighbours left porch lights on and running shoes outside in tribute. Classmates like Hayley Munro and Jasmine Huber shared memories of their friends, recalling their kindness, ambition, and joyful spirits.

“They had big dreams,” said Munro. “It hurts knowing they won’t get to chase them.”

Remembering Coach Matt Eckert

Eckert, known as “Ecky,” was more than a teacher—he was a mentor and coach to many. He also served as a Junior B assistant coach for the NorthStars Lacrosse Club in Owen Sound.

“His infectious smile and caring heart made a lasting impact,” said general manager Ethan Woods in a heartfelt tribute. Students described him as fair, approachable, and full of good humour—even when laying down discipline.

Investigation Ongoing

The Ontario Provincial Police say the group was driving through Thorndale and Cobble Hills roads, northeast of London, when their SUV collided with a transport truck. A second SUV then hit their vehicle. Three students died at the scene, while Eckert and another teen died later in hospital.

The truck driver and two other people suffered minor injuries. Police have not yet confirmed how the collision unfolded and say the investigation remains active.

A Loss That Will Linger

Jamie Pettit, speaking for the Bluewater District School Board, called it a time of “unimaginable grief.” Mental health resources have been deployed, and schools across Bruce and Grey counties are offering support to affected families and peers.

“There’s a huge void now,” said Pettit. “But in this tragedy, we’ve also seen the best in people—coming together in kindness and strength.”

How do you think small communities can continue to support each other after such heartbreaking loss?
