Netflix Raises Prices in Canada and Other Markets
Netflix has increased its subscription prices in Canada and other markets, citing the need to reinvest in its offerings. Starting January 21, 2025, Canadians will pay higher monthly fees for all tiers of Netflix plans. Below are the updated prices:

- Standard with Ads: $7.99/month (previously $5.99/month)
- Standard (No Ads, HD): $18.99/month (previously $16.49/month)
- Premium (No Ads, 4K): $23.99/month (previously $20.99/month)
Netflix attributed these changes to its continued investment in programming and platform improvements. “We will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can reinvest to further improve Netflix,” the company stated in its Q4 2024 earnings report.
This marks the first price hike in Canada since January 2022, when the Premium plan rose to $20.99/month. Last year, the platform also discontinued its Basic $9.99/month ad-free plan.
Strong Subscriber Growth Drives Financial Milestones
The streaming platform’s decision to increase prices follows significant subscriber growth. In Q4 2024, the platform added 19 million subscribers, ending the year with 302 million memberships globally. Key contributors included the release of Squid Game Season 2 and live sports events, such as NFL games and a high-profile boxing match featuring Mike Tyson.
The company’s operating income exceeded $10 billion in 2024 for the first time, representing a 16% revenue increase year-over-year. For 2025, Netflix projects revenue growth of 12–14%, aiming for $43.5–$44.5 billion.

Expanding Offerings Amid Industry Competition
To stay competitive, the company has implemented several strategies:
- Ad-Supported Plans: Aimed at cost-sensitive users, these plans provide access at a lower price point.
- Password Sharing Crackdown: Designed to convert shared accounts into paying subscribers.
- New Content Formats: Investments in live programming and mobile gaming diversify Netflix’s appeal.
In a letter to shareholders, the company outlined its priorities. “We have to continue to improve all aspects of Netflix — more series and films, a great product experience, and increased sophistication in pricing strategies,” the company wrote.
