Fire Erupts on Nelson Street

The fire broke out around 11:20 p.m. on August 1 at an apartment building on Nelson Street, between Cambria Road North and Albert Street. According to the Huron County OPP and Goderich Fire Department, the building was already fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.

As of early Saturday morning, firefighters remained at the scene. Firefighters evacuated nearby homes on Brock Street and Nelson Street East due to heavy smoke and safety concerns.

Warming Centre Opened for Displaced Residents

To assist affected residents, a warming centre was set up at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 390 Parsons Court. Victim Services Huron Perth were on-site to provide support.

Goderich Mayor Trevor Bazinet confirmed that the apartment building was a total loss, stating, “Tonight is an extremely hard night for several people in our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has lost their homes and all of their belongings.”

Mayor Bazinet praised the swift response from Goderich Fire Department, Huron OPP, EMS, and additional fire crews from surrounding areas. He encouraged residents to help by donating gift cards rather than food items, noting that they allow families to buy exactly what they need.

Ongoing Road Closures and Investigation

Nelson Street remains closed between Cambria Road North and Albert Street. Officials ask the public to avoid the area to give emergency crews room to work. Authorities advise residents to keep windows closed due to lingering smoke in the area.

The Office of the Fire Marshal has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Updates will be provided once more details are available.
