Three Car-Free Day Trips From Toronto By GO Train And Bus

· ·

A day outside Toronto does not have to begin with a rental car. Hamilton, Burlington and Niagara Falls are all reachable on the GO network, with different trade-offs once you step off the train.

Hamilton works best for a walkable waterfront-and-food day. Burlington needs a local-transit connection from its GO station. Niagara Falls costs more if you add WEGO, but the combined ticket covers the local attraction shuttle. Always check the live trip planner before leaving because service and platform details can change.

Before You Buy A Weekend Pass

GO Transit’s one-day weekend and statutory-holiday pass costs $10 and covers unlimited GO train and bus travel for one day. It is sold online, must be displayed on a smartphone and cannot be loaded onto PRESTO or bought at a station.

The pass must be activated at least five minutes before travel. It remains available to activate for seven days after purchase, is non-refundable and is not covered by GO’s Service Guarantee. It does not include UP Express, Burlington Transit, Hamilton Street Railway, Niagara’s WEGO system or other local transit.

Children age 12 and under ride free on GO, but the fare rules of connecting transit systems may differ. Compare the $10 pass with regular GO fares for your exact trip, especially if you are travelling on a weekday or using a regional connection.

Hamilton: James Street And The Waterfront

Use GO’s Hamilton day-trip guide as a starting point, then plan a route to West Harbour GO. From there, the James Street North corridor and harbourfront make a practical pairing without a car.

Begin with coffee or lunch on James Street North, then continue toward Bayfront Park, Pier 8 or the waterfront trail according to weather and mobility needs. Hamilton also has the downtown Hamilton GO Centre, but the better station depends on the day’s service and the places you want to reach.

This option suits travellers who want to spend most of the day walking in one district. Use the official trip planner and Hamilton Street Railway information for any local connection; do not assume a Toronto transit transfer applies.

Burlington: Downtown And Spencer Smith Park

Burlington GO is not on the downtown waterfront. From the station, you can take Burlington Transit or walk roughly 30 minutes down Brant Street toward the waterfront. That extra step is the main difference between this trip and a West Harbour-based Hamilton day.

Once downtown, combine Spencer Smith Park, the waterfront promenade and nearby restaurants. The route is compact after you reach the core, and the lakefront gives the day a different pace from a shopping-centre stop.

Check the local bus schedule in both directions before settling on a return train. Weekend frequencies can leave a longer gap than Toronto riders expect, and the $10 GO Weekend Pass itself does not include local transit fares. Eligible GO-to-local-transit trips paid with PRESTO or contactless payment may qualify for Ontario One Fare.

Niagara Falls: GO Plus WEGO

GO offers direct Niagara service, but Niagara Falls GO station is not beside the falls. The simplest car-free connection is a GO+WEGO ticket, which combines GO travel with unlimited rides on Niagara’s WEGO visitor network.

As of September 10, the adult package starts at $22 for one day and $35 for two days. The package is offered throughout the week. Starting April 6, 2026, the GO+WEGO Combo Ticket includes the extended Niagara-on-the-Lake shuttle, which runs seasonally through October. Check the current timetable and stop details before building the day around that connection.

A straightforward itinerary keeps the focus on the Niagara Parks corridor: reach the falls, walk between viewpoints, choose one paid attraction if desired and leave enough time to return to the GO station. Attraction admission, food and any service outside the package are extra.

How To Choose The Right Trip

  • Choose Hamilton for the easiest blend of food, neighbourhood walking and waterfront time.
  • Choose Burlington for a quieter lakefront day if you are comfortable with a short local connection or walk.
  • Choose Niagara Falls for headline scenery and a longer day with a separate attraction-transit plan.
