The retired cancer survivor recently snagged his third major lottery win in under nine months, claiming $1 million in the May 3 Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball draw. That win adds to his previous jackpots of $500,000 in August 2024 and $1 million in November 2024. He also scored $250,000 over a decade ago, bringing his total lifetime winnings to $2.5 million.

“I Know the Odds Are Astronomical”

Despite his unbelievable streak, Serkin remains humble and grounded.

“I know the odds are astronomical,” he told the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC). “I don’t think it’ll happen again, but I still like buying tickets.”

In fact, the odds of winning the Lotto Max jackpot or Maxmillions prize are one in 33,294,800 — odds Serkin has repeatedly defied.

From Gas Station to Gold Ball

Serkin bought his most recent winning ticket at Shell Lethbridge on Fairway Plaza Road. He made the purchase on a whim while buying gas, noticing that the Gold Ball draw was nearing its final stages. That instinct turned into another million-dollar payout.

His winning ticket, selection 24645097-05, matched a white ball on the draw.

Friends Say “Not Again?!”

After checking his ticket, Serkin casually joined his friends for coffee.

“They asked to see it and said, ‘Not again?!’” he laughed.

His wife, still in disbelief, has been by his side through each win. Following their previous trip to Hawaii, the couple now plans to explore Newfoundland with their latest windfall.

A Lifetime of Lotto

Serkin has been playing Lotto 6/49 since it launched in 1982, saying he enjoys the process as much as the result.

“You check your ticket, and if you win, you’re happy. If you don’t, you can always try again,” he said.

He credits both luck and life perspective: “I’m retired, I’m a cancer survivor — I’m just grateful for all of it.”

A Reminder to Play Responsibly

While Serkin’s story is remarkable, it’s important to remember that lottery outcomes are based on chance. Gambling should be done responsibly, and support resources are available for anyone experiencing related issues.
