Parts of Manitoba Under Severe Thunderstorm Watch Following Tornado Warnings
Manitobans are being urged to stay alert as severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings swept through parts of the province on Monday, July 21, 2025. While tornado warnings have now ended, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) maintains severe thunderstorm watches in several areas, including Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie, and the Interlake region.

Tornado Warnings Issued and Lifted
Shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday, ECCC issued tornado warnings for the rural municipalities of Macdonald and Morris, covering communities such as Brunkild, Starbuck, La Salle, Rosenort, and Aubigny. By 7:20 p.m., the warnings transitioned to severe thunderstorm warnings, which have since ended as of 8:05 p.m.
Meteorologists tracked a severe thunderstorm potentially producing a tornado, with radar imagery showing signs of damaging winds, large hail, and intense rainfall. Residents were advised to seek shelter immediately, especially if they spotted funnel clouds or flying debris.
Thunderstorm Watches Continue Across Manitoba
Earlier in the afternoon, ECCC issued severe thunderstorm watches for the Manitoba Interlake region, including Gimli, Selkirk, Winnipeg Beach, and Grand Rapids. These storms are linked to a trough of low pressure in the region, which could still lead to large hail, strong winds, and flash flooding as the system moves eastward.
Although the tornado threat has diminished, ECCC warns that lightning and flash flooding remain hazards. The storm risk is expected to taper off by Monday evening.

Safety First: “When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors”
ECCC continues to stress public safety. Their message remains clear:
“When thunder roars, go indoors.”
Lightning strikes can be deadly. Strong winds and hail can cause severe damage. Flash flooding can also develop quickly in low-lying areas.
Officials recommend that residents monitor weather alerts, take shelter in safe structures, and avoid unnecessary travel during active warnings.
