Hope House to Open in Toronto for Homeless Women and Children
In May 2025, Toronto’s St. Felix Centre will open Hope House, a 31-unit affordable housing complex designed for women experiencing homelessness and their children. The initiative aims to address Toronto’s ongoing housing crisis and improve access to supportive, long-term housing.

Located at 25 Augusta Avenue, behind the St. Felix Centre, the project will offer rent-geared-to-income units, 24/7 support staff, educational resources, and access to psychiatric care. The $20 million project received funding from all three levels of government.
Women Represent a Hidden Homeless Population
Homelessness often affects women differently than men. Many women experience “hidden homelessness”—living in cars, staying in unsafe housing, or relying on exploitative relationships to avoid shelters. These cases are often uncounted in official data.
Key Statistics
- Over 12,000 people currently use Toronto’s shelter system.
- Women make up 40% of shelter users.
- In the first half of 2024, 135 homeless individuals died in Toronto. 19% were women, and 4% were transgender.
- The median age of death for homeless women dropped from 43 years in 2023 to 36 in 2024.
Why Hope House Matters
Tarrah Seymour, an assistant manager at St. Felix Centre, has lived through homelessness. She believes Hope House can support women in building stability for themselves and their families.
“It’s going to give them the support they need and the family they never really had,” she said.

Brian Harris, executive director of the centre, emphasized the potential for reunification between mothers and children. Stable housing can allow mothers to regain custody and rebuild their lives.
Advocates Say More Resources Are Urgently Needed
Despite the promise of Hope House, advocates say the project is only a small step toward meeting growing demand. Diana Chan McNally, a community worker and fellow at Maytree Canada, said resources for women remain severely limited.
“We don’t have enough resources for women. That’s a fact,” McNally said.
She added that many women are looking to escape dangerous environments but lack access to safe shelter options.

City of Toronto’s Housing Commitment

The City of Toronto has committed to building more supportive housing. A city spokesperson stated the goal is to approve 10,000 new affordable and supportive homes for women and gender-diverse people by 2030. Hope House is part of that long-term strategy.
Hope House represents a meaningful step toward housing justice for women and families in Toronto. Though not enough on its own, the project sets a precedent for what is possible when public and nonprofit sectors collaborate.
More initiatives like Hope House are needed to tackle both visible and hidden homelessness. Continued investment and advocacy will play a key role in ensuring safe, stable housing for all.
