Toronto Prepares for Potential Flooding as Snow Begins to Melt
Toronto officials are preparing for potential flooding this week as warmer temperatures cause accumulated snow from recent storms to melt. The city has activated response plans to minimize flooding impacts in vulnerable areas.

City’s Flood Preparedness Plan
The City of Toronto announced that crews will inspect and clear catch basins in flood-prone neighborhoods. Equipment has been placed at strategic locations to enable quick responses if flooding occurs.
Snow removal operations continue across the city to reduce the amount of snow that could melt and add to water runoff. Officials noted that clearing snow from roads and sidewalks could take up to three weeks due to the volume from two recent storms.
Weather Forecast and Flood Risk
Environment Canada forecasts warmer weather for Toronto this week, with temperatures reaching 6°C on Monday and remaining above zero until Friday. Light showers are possible on Tuesday and Thursday, which could increase the melt rate.
Despite the warming trend, the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) stated it does not expect river flooding at this time. However, the TRCA cautioned that conditions could change with significant rainfall. If necessary, flood messages will be issued.

Credit Valley Conservation’s Advisory
The Credit Valley Conservation (CVC), serving areas west of Toronto, issued an early notice of potential localized flooding. The snowmelt could lead to watershed runoff of up to 25 millimeters by Thursday.
While significant river flooding is unlikely, higher water levels and minor localized flooding may occur. The CVC urges residents to stay away from watercourses due to the risks of fast-moving water and unstable ice.
How Residents Can Prepare
Toronto officials recommend that residents:
- Clear snow away from storm drains to improve water flow.
- Stay informed through weather updates and local alerts.
- Avoid rivers, streams, and flooded areas for safety.
- Secure loose outdoor items to prevent them from being swept away.
City’s Ongoing Snow Removal Efforts
The city continues working to remove large snow piles that block traffic and pedestrian walkways. Officials estimate that fully clearing the streets and sidewalks will take several weeks. These efforts aim to reduce the risk of excess meltwater entering the drainage system.
