The recall follows the discovery of a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” lids, which could compromise the product’s seal. Over time, this flaw could lead to contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria responsible for botulism—a potentially fatal foodborne illness.

Affected Brands and Locations

The recalled tuna cans were sold in multiple states across the U.S.:

  • H-E-B label: Available in Texas.
  • Trader Joe’s label: Sold in 19 states, including New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
  • Genova (7-ounce cans): Available at Costco in Florida and Georgia.
  • Genova (5-ounce cans): Distributed through Harris Teeter, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and independent retailers across 10 states.
  • Van Camp’s label: Sold at Walmart and independent retailers in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey.

Customers should check their Best By dates and UPC numbers on the bottom of the cans. Tri-Union Seafoods has released a list of these identifiers in its official press release.

Health Risks and Symptoms

Botulism is a serious illness that can cause muscle paralysis, breathing difficulties, and even death if left untreated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms include:

  • Blurred vision and dry mouth
  • Difficulty swallowing and speaking

Tri-Union Seafoods advises consumers not to eat the recalled tuna, even if it appears safe. Anyone experiencing symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Consumer Options: Refunds and Disposal

If you have purchased any recalled products, you can:

  • Return them to the store for a full refund.
  • Dispose of them safely.
  • Contact Tri-Union Seafoods for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.

Airing on the Side of Caution

Tri-Union Seafoods reports no illnesses so far and assures customers that this recall does not affect its other products.

This recall follows a series of food safety alerts in 2025, including FDA warnings about baked goods contaminated with listeria and undeclared allergens in snack products. Food safety experts advise consumers to stay vigilant and check recall alerts regularly.
