US Booze Exports To Canada Plunge 63 Percent As Local Boycotts Hold Strong

· ·

Torontonians love a good drink, but they refuse to pour American liquor into their glasses right now. A massive cross-country boycott has completely derailed U.S. alcohol exports to Canada. In fact, American distillers lost hundreds of millions of dollars over the past year.

Shoppers across the GTA already prioritize homegrown brands for their everyday needs. We see this shift everywhere, from folks buying everyday apparel at warehouse one clothing to shoppers filling their carts with Ontario-made groceries. Now, this fierce loyalty dominates the liquor store aisles.

Why Toronto Shelves Lack American Bourbon

The trade war sparked by the Trump administration last year forced Canada to fight back. Eight out of ten provinces instructed their liquor boards to yank American beer, wine, and spirits from store shelves. You will struggle to find Kentucky bourbon or California wine at any LCBO location today.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford stands firm on this issue. During recent Government of Ontario announcements, he stated that American alcohol stays off our shelves until the U.S. drops its tariffs entirely. Prime Minister Mark Carney also actively defends the provincial bans against American political pressure.

Devastating Losses For American Distillers

The Distilled Spirits Council of the United States recently shared grim numbers with trade officials. Chris Swonger, the council’s CEO, confirmed that exports to Canada crashed by 63 percent in 2025. He called the financial hit absolutely devastating for the industry.

This ongoing trade friction wiped out $536 million in cross-border trade. The staggering financial fallout includes:

  • U.S. wine exports plummeting from $460 million to a mere $103 million.
  • American distilled spirits dropping from $238 million down to $89 million.
  • U.S. breweries seeing their exports to Canada shrink from $47 million to $17 million.
  • American distilleries slashing nearly 1,000 jobs over a 12-month period.

What Torontonians Drink Instead

Canadians did not stop drinking; they simply changed their orders. Independent bars across Toronto now stock their rails exclusively with Canadian whiskey and local craft spirits.

Ontario wineries benefit massively from this market shift. Locals happily replace California reds with gorgeous VQA bottles from Niagara and Prince Edward County. Consumers also purchase more global imports from Europe to fill the void.

Some brands you think are American actually produce their drinks right here in Canada. Local brewers make Budweiser in Halifax, while workers in Montreal distill and bottle Southern Comfort. You can still support Canadian jobs while enjoying these familiar names.
